The Nikai Celebration

Held annually, the Nikai Festival in Babungo (about an hour away from Bamenda) is an event celebrating the traditions of the local people through music and dance. The dancers are insiders of the Ngumba secret society who are subjects of the Fon, the ruler of the region. According to tradition, this dance is a ritual to appease the ancestral spirits of the village so that peace prevails and that the crops are good. The Nikai provided a number of unforgettable sights and sounds that the following pictures attempt to capture.

Not sure. Maybe he likes the big-name designers. Like Kenneth Cole-bra. Or maybe Viperry Ellis.

Peace and good crops to you, man! May all your snakes be...distant.

Snakes, smakes...what about the guys with the green stuff sticking out of their head gear? Is that lettuce or paper or money? And what about the skeleton gig - are these people conversing with the old bones? Telling jokes and dirty stories? Is the skeleton laughing or just trying to be polite? And the snake guy: what does he have hanging around his neck? A dead bird? Curiouser and curiouser, as Alice would say. Glenn: did you dance or were you a party pooper? We need to know just what kind of a party animal you really are. Victor
